Upset over separation from wife, man commits suicide in Delhi

A man committed suicide by hanging himself with a ceiling fan of his room after his family and his in-laws decided that his wife will live separately following marital discord between them.

The incident took place in the Lahori Gate area of North Delhi on Monday, a day after the family of the deceased and that of his wife mutually decided on separation as a measure to avoid frequent domestic disputes.

The deceased has been identified as Ashif Mumtaj (40), a resident of Gali Samosan located in Farash Khana, Lahori Gate. He was running a footwear shop at Wazirabad.

The police are inquiring into the matter and legal proceedings are being carried out.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Delhi), Sagar Singh Kalsi said that information regarding suicide in the Lahori Gate area was received on December 19.

On receiving the information, Sub-Inspector Harender reached at the spot along with other police staff and found that one person had committed suicide by hanging himself. The body was shifted to a nearby hospital and inquiry was initiated.

According to the police, brother of the deceased Wasim stated that his brother, Ashif Mumtaj, got married about eight years ago and had two children. He further stated that his brother was passing through depression due to marital discord.

It was informed that on Sunday, the family of Ashif and that of his wife had a meeting to decide the fate of their relationship and after the meeting it was decided that between them that they will live separately. The next day, Ashif committed suicide at his home.

The police are probing the matter.
