The Delhi government has refused to allow Muslim teachers working in government schools to go for Friday prayers during school hours.

The matter came into light after Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC) received a reply to a letter sent to the Directorate of Education regarding permission to Muslim employees in schools for offering “Jumma (Friday) prayers” between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

The DMC claimed it sent the same query to the municipal corporations but was yet to receive their response.

Talking with the Statesman, DMC Chairman Zaraful Islam Khan said the commission was approached by teachers association ~Akhil Dilli Prathmik Shikshak Sangh~ with a request to allow them to go for prayers on Friday, after which it had sought a response from the education department and the municipal corporations on the issue.

Khan said that the Education Department of the Delhi government had in a written response said that teachers “can’t leave their classes” and go for Friday prayers, as it would “harm the interests of students”.

Khan said the Education Department in its response made it further clear that teachers had to be present in school by 12.45 p.m. for the second session, classes for which begin at 1 p.m. and rules can’t be changed.

The DMC chairman said when the department’s explanation was forwarded to concerned teachers, they came up with a Union Home Ministry order of 1954 which stated that employees could go for prayers after deduction of a certain amount from their salaries.
