New Delhi, 11 November
Jamia Millia Islamia has served show-cause notice to its four students for allegedly distributing leaflets carrying controversial religious message.
The students distributed leaflets to their friends terming ‘Tazia’ – replica of Imam Husain’s tomb – during Muharram, the first month of Islamic calendar, as un-Islamic. The move raised eyebrows of some students – mostly belonging to Shia sect of Muslims – who complained to the authority. University proctor Mr Masood Alam confirmed the development. "The students have been served notices and they have been asked to explain why they breached the rules," he said.
According to sources, three out of four graduate and post-graduate students living in university hostels have been asked to vacate their accommodations. The event marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala where Imam Husain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was martyred by the forces of the second Umayyad caliph Yazid.
