Bharat ASEAN Maitri Park

To showcase the historical and cultural bonds among ASEAN countries, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has developed the ‘Bharat ASEAN Maitri Park’ with the theme ‘Shared Values, Common Destiny’ on Tughlaq Road in Lutyens’ Delhi at a cost of Rs 51 crore.

The park is spread over an area of approximately 2.81 acres and includes facilities such as jogging and walking track, fountain, lotus pond and sprinkler irrigation system.

An elegant feature of the park is a ‘lotus pond’, a small water body surrounded by lush green flora and a walking path. An official said it will serve as home to various species of birds like Kingfisher, White Wagtail, Common Moorhen, Little Grebe, Sunbirds, Common Coot and many others. The lotus pond was conceived as an eco-conservation project. The plant saplings beside it represent the flora found in all ten ASEAN countries as well as India.

NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar said it is a unique symbol of India-ASEAN friendship. He said, “Delhi, the capital city of India is culturally very vibrant, where traditional and modern culture move hand in hand. New Delhi is the heart of the capital of India and lakhs of people from various countries, neighbouring states and other parts of the country always wish to visit here regularly.”

A senior NDMC official said, “As a tribute to Indo-ASEAN affinity, the name of this park is inscribed in all the official languages of ASEAN countries. Our architecture takes increasing cognizance of Vastu Shastra which emphasises balance of natural elements in construction.”

Earlier, the Council had dedicated an Indo-Africa Friendship Rose Garden, BRICS Rose Garden and renamed some important locations such as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Marg and Teen Murti Haifa Chowk.

The NDMC has developed this park in a span of 53 days. The ASEAN Maitri Park will include sculptures of ASEAN countries having descriptions in their own language to strengthen friendship, love and solidarity and popularise the cultural heritage of these countries among people.
