Govt to buy 1000 beds for dengue patients

Concerned over the rising number of dengue cases and deaths in the capital, Health Minister Satyender Jain on Sunday held an emergency meeting, in which he announced that in order to accommodate the rising number of patients, the state Government will buy 1000 new beds.

"We have decided to buy more beds to accomodate patients wherever they get space in all the hospitals," said  ain.

The decision comes in the wake of the suicide by the parents of a boy who died of the disease allegedly after being refused admission at several hospitals, sparking a public outrage. Jain said that his government is also concerned about the rising number of dengue cases and had instructed the concerned officials to take appropriate measures for that.

"I have called the three commissioners of MCD on Monday for a meeting and take steps to curb the dengue. The government is concerned about the treatment of the patients and equally worried to stop the number of cases. For this, steps such as santiation and fogging are required. It will be raised in tomorrow’s meeting," said Jain.

After the meeting, the health minister conducted a surprise inspection at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital to take stock of the dengue cases and availability of beds there.

Sources said that, during the inspection, Jain was heckled by relatives of the patients at the hospital.

After the inspection, Jain said: "There are two patients on a bed, we don’t deny this. They (hospital staff) are not refusing admission."

He said that the hospitals had been specifically instructed not to deny admission to any patient.

"Discussion on the steps to be taken to prevent spread of dengue in Delhi was held in the meeting. All hospitals have been directed not to deny admission to any patient," Jain said after the meeting on dengue cases in the capital which was attended by all district magistrates (DMs) and divisional commissioners (DCs).

"They have been asked to make appropriate arrangements to tackle cases of dengue. Directions for monitoring of dengue cases were also issued in the meeting," he added.

The dengue outbreak has caused shortage of beds for these patients across hospitals.

On Saturday, the central government ordered a probe while the Delhi government had issued notices to five private hospitals in the capital after a seven-year-old boy Avinash died of dengue. He was allegedly denied admission despite being in critical condition. After his death, the child’s traumatised parents committed suicide.
