While asking political parties and news channels to act more responsibly and avoid speculating on dates of polls, the Election Commission on Friday ruled out any ‘leak’ of the schedule of the Karnataka Assembly elections as alleged by Opposition.

The EC had set up a committee on 27 March to look into the allegations of leak of schedule of Karnataka elections well before it was announced by the EC.

The chief of BJP’s IT cell Amit Malviya, state Congress leader B Srivastava and two TV channels had revealed the date of Assembly polls before the EC announced it officially on 27 March.

Opposition parties including the Congress had alleged that the schedule of polls was leaked to the ruling party. The BJP refuted the allegations and said their source of information was a TV channel.

The committee in its five-page report said the TV report was not ‘a leak’ but mere speculation, which has been done earlier as well. It, however, advised both political parties and TV channels to avoid such speculation at the crucial juncture when the EC was announcing the date.

“It is the responsibility of all stake holders, including media and political parties not to attempt to any speculations that may create unnecessary doubt in the mind of people.”
