DU yet to appoint media coordinator

DU yet to appoint media coordinator

Delhi University, one of India’ most sought after universities which always remains in the news, has not had a media coordinator for the past two months, causing much inconvenience to journalists covering DU affairs.

The media coordinator acted as a nodal point for all official information. The erstwhile media coordinator, Malay Neerav, demitted office on 31 May after which no one has been officially appointed as his successor.

The media room at the conference centre which once acted as a hot spot for journalists is now deserted.

"Now not even a single paper or magazine is available here for us to read, after the media coordinator resigned from his post the office has become literally dysfunctional," said a reporter of a Hindi daily.

The room adjacent to the media room which was once the office of the media coordinator remains closed most of the time. Journalists complained that the major problem they face is the lack of any proper source or one-stop destination for news of the varsity.

"The media coordinator acted as a proper channel through which we got all the information. Now we have to run from pillar to post for confirmation of any information," said a reporter of an electronic channel.

The resignation of Malay Neerav came nearly two months after Yogesh Tyagi assumed charge as the 22nd Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University.

"I voluntarily demitted my office and sought repatriation. I was the media coordinator and also acted as official spokesperson of the university," said Neerav.

Although DU has appointed two official spokespersons, they are authorised to talk to media on admission-related matters only.

"I am the university spokesperson for admission and no one is acting as PRO or media coordinator right now to the best of my knowledge," said Dr Kishore K Das, one of the spokespersons.

He said it was only a temporary arrangement for admissions. With the admission process almost over and DUSU elections round the corner, the university administration has been urged to appoint a media coordinator soon.

However, a senior teacher said it would not be easy for the university to appoint such a person.

"To tackle the task of media coordinator of a university like DU is certainly not a cake-walk. Every eye remains concentrated on DU related affairs. Malay had several years of experience and he knew how to deal with the media. His successor would be really hard to find," said the teacher.
