New Delhi, 9 August
Following the interpretation centre at Qutub Minar, Delhi Tourism is also planning a similar centre at the Purana Quila. A proposal to this effect was sent to the Delhi government, which initially allocated Rs 309 crore for seven heritage sites in the city, over a period of four years.
The interpretation centre at Purana Quila, costing Rs 30 crore, will start functioning after the inauguration of Qutub Minar centre.
"The government has given us funds for seven circuits development in the city which includes heritage monuments like Qutub Minar, Tughlakabad Fort, Lodhi Road, Hauz Khas Village, Shahjahanabad, Mutiny Memorial and the Central Vista comprising Luteyn&’s Delhi and with these funds we are planning to include Puran Quila," said Mr G G Saxena, Managing Director and CEO, Delhi Tourism & Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC).
According to Mr Saxena, the interpretation centre will have 3D models, images of other historical monuments including Purana Quila, replicas of instruments and other images adding to its historical values. "The project is in the pipeline and we will start work on it after the Qutub Minar centre work is done, as it is in its final stages and will be housed at the old PWD guest house," said Mr Saxena.
According to Delhi Tourism, Purana Quila gives us a glimpse into the lives of the people during the Mughal and Afghan periods and the proposed centre within the premises will be based on this.
According to the proposal sent to the Ministry of Tourism, "The interpretation centre is expected to boost visitors’ experience by imparting the comprehensive historical information about the monument. It will encourage visitors to spend longer time in the site. It could be used as a major awareness building programme especially among citizens and school children." Purana Quila will be Delhi’s third monument having an interpretation centre. Two other centres are at Qutub Minar and Jantar Mantar.
