Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik on Friday launched a new e-challan system and e-payment gateway to improve prosecution against traffic violators and to set better road safety measures in the national capital.

“With the introduction of the e-challan system, the traffic violators would no longer need to go to the Traffic Police headquarters to pay the fine. They would be able to pay challans online,” Patnaik said after launching the project at Delhi Police headquarters here in the presence of other senior officers including Special Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Taj Hassan.

Traffic violators will soon get their violation alerts via post and SMS in their cell phones, Patnaik said. This system would be a significant milestone in deploying cutting-edge technologies for improving prosecution against traffic violators and will help to achieve better road safety standards in Delhi, the police commissioner said. This would be a key tool for evidence to establish the credibility of the prosecution, he added.

Altogether 6, 03, 503 challans were issued during the testing phase over the last three years by using the e-challan devices as a result of which compounding fine amounting to Rs 9.5 crore was collected, Delhi Police said.

The online payment facility would not only encourage offenders to pay, but it would also make the system easier and ensure more collection of fines, a senior Traffic Police officer said. It will also ensure systematic maintenance of records, he added.
