Almost 10 months after he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), former Delhi Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely returned to the Congress fold in the presence of senior leaders from the party at Delhi.

Top leaders, including Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken and party’s spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala, welcomed Lovely back into the party at a ceremony held to mark his return on Saturday, 17 February, at AICC headquarters.

Announcing Lovely’s return, Maken said, “We are happy to announce that Lovely has joined Congress back. We welcome him to the party again.”

Maken said that Lovely and his family have made immense contribution to the party.

“Congress will be strengthened by his presence again and we will serve the people of Delhi,” Maken said.

Before attending his official induction back into the party, the 49-year-old former minister for revenue and urban development met Congress president Rahul Gandhi at the latter’s residence.

Lovely’s return is being seen as a major boost to the Congress ahead of by-polls for 20 assembly seats in Delhi.

Lovely had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in April last year ahead of the MCD polls in the national capital. A four-time MLA, Lovely was first elected to the Delhi Legislative Assembly in 1998.

He had joined the BJP in April 2017 expressing his unhappiness with the Congress leadership, including then vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

Following his return, Lovely said that he was an “ideological misfit” in the BJP.

According to reports, Lovely’s return comes at a time when ties between Maken and former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit have become warmer.
