A 39-year-old businessman, driving his four wheeler on high speed, allegedly crushed five persons including two women in Safdarjung Enclave area of south Delhi this afternoon.
According to police, the incident took place at around 12.30 pm when the accused, identified as Sidhharta Grover, a resident of RK Puram, ran over the victims his white colour Swift DeZire car. Police said Grover, who deals in export-import business, was heading towards his office situated in Safdarjung Development area from his house.
"When Grover, in an inebriated state, reached near IIT Gate close to the Safdarjung Development area, he apparently lost control over his speeding vehicle and rammed it into a Santro car. Thereafter, his vehicle collided with a fruit kiosk and crushed five persons standing nearby before coming to a halt," said the police.
Immediately, police was informed and the injured persons, identified as Shushila (70), her daughter Anu (40), three bystanders, Brij Mohan, Rajiv Dushyant and Manoj, were rushed to hospital, where the senior citizen was declared brought dead.
Doctors at the hospital said the spinal cord of Anu has sustained severe injuries and her condition is stated to be critical yet stable. While the three others are recuperating to their injuries that are minor in nature.
Meanwhile, several passersby gathered at the spot who caught hold of the errant driver and handed him to the police after beating him. Police said they have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Safdarjung Enclave police station against the accused Grover and subsequently, he has been arrested.
Police said Grover’s medical examination proved that he was driving the car in an inebriated condition.
