New Delhi, 9 August
Two bike-borne assailants threw acid on a 21-year-old woman, leaving her severely injured. The incident took place when the victim was returning home in GTB Enclave area of north east Delhi Wednesday evening. The attack came less than a month after the apex court ruled to regulate the sale of acid across the country.
According to police, Rashmi is a resident of Nand Nagri. She is undergoing treatment at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital for burns in face, neck and right arm.
In her statement to the police, Rashmi said that she was near gate number 11 of GTB Hospital, when two men, on a motorcycle, waylaid her at around 7.30 pm. Before she could smell a rat, they hurled acid on her and sped away. The person riding pillion had his face covered due to which, she could not identify them.
A case under section 326-A (hurt by acid attack) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered with GTB Enclave police station and investigations are on.
A senior police officer said that they have launched a manhunt.
The incident has raised serious questions about the implementation of Supreme Court guidelines as acid is still easily available in the market. The Supreme Court in July had completely prohibited over-the-counter sale of acid and other corrosive chemicals unless the seller maintains a register recording the address and other details of the buyer and the quantum.
