The heart of Delhi, India Gate and nearby areas, including Connaught Place, saw a massive traffic jam on the first day of New Year. Thousands of people reportedly gathered at the India Gate, leading to chaos and commuters remained stuck for hours in the traffic. Delhi Police issued a statement which read: “Traffic will remain very heavy near India Gate C-Hexagon due to a gathering of more than 1 lakh pedestrians and heavy volume of motorists.”

Since India Gate is flooded with people even on normal days, people in hordes thronged the iconic location on the first day of the new year.

The Connaught Place too was choc-a-block with shoppers and New Year revelers, leading to a massive traffic snarl that started in the afternoon and continued till late evening. Vehicles moved at a snail’s pace and it took hours for the commuters to get out of the area. As per reports, some people had to leave the place without stepping out of their vehicles as there was no space to park their cars.

Reports of traffic jams from other parts of the Delhi were pouring in as families were out, Monday being a holiday.
