Two people died after their motorcycle rammed into a divider at the newly inaugurated Signature Bridge in New Delhi early on Friday.

The bike-borne men fell off the bridge after their vehicle hit the divider.

The police suspect that the two unidentified men were taking a selfie while speeding.

The Signature Bridge over the Yamuna was inaugurated by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on November 4 and was thrown open for the public on November 5.

The new landmark is expected to reduce the commuting time between northeast areas and the inner city from 45 minutes to just 10 minutes, combating pollution and saving fuel.

It is India’s first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge in New Delhi.

Announced in 2004, the bridge missed several deadlines. It was supposed to be operational in 2010 before the Commonwealth Games but got delayed due to several issues.

The Signature Bridge was inaugurated amid a surcharged atmosphere with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal attacking the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the country needs bridges, schools and hospitals not temples and statues for progress.

High drama prevailed before the inauguration of the bridge with Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari and scores of supporters staging a protest for allegedly not being invited to the inaugural event of the newly-built city landmark. They also had a “scuffle” with some AAP workers.
