Post-monsoon showers on Monday brought a sharp dip in Delhi’s temperature, with the mercury plunging by nearly 8°C and a chilly wave sweeping across the city, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Under the influence of a western disturbance, Safdarjung — the capital’s base weather station — recorded 3.4 mm of rainfall between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

The maximum temperature at Safdarjung was 26.5°C, which is 7.7°C below normal, while the minimum settled at 20.6°C, 1.7°C below normal.

Cumulative rainfall of 10.3 mm in the 24 hours up to 8:30 a.m. on Monday resulted in a fall of 3–4°C in the minimum temperature and a more pronounced 6–9°C drop in the maximum temperature across the national capital.

The weather department said westerly winds prevailed over Delhi during the past 24 hours, with speeds reaching up to 18 kmph and gusts up to 46 kmph.

For Tuesday, the IMD has forecast overcast skies with one or two spells of light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are likely, with speeds reaching up to 50 kmph in the morning and early afternoon.
