Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood on Tuesday said that while the national capital experienced power cuts last summer due to issues in the power system, the government has since significantly improved the power infrastructure.
He said the Delhi Government has been continuously working to strengthen the power system and, as a result, despite rising temperatures this year, the city has not witnessed any major power outages.
The minister stated that the government has prepared a comprehensive Power Master Plan to further strengthen the electricity distribution system in the national capital.
According to Sood, with the recent improvements, the peak power demand of 8,441 MW, which was recorded on 12 June last year, has already been successfully met in May this year.
He further said that there is still scope for improvement and that Delhi’s power infrastructure will become even more robust over the next two years, after which power cuts will be completely eliminated.
Sood also informed that Delhi recorded electricity consumption of 168 million units on 25 May this year, compared to 110 million units on the same date last year.
He added that the temperature on 25 May this year was 43°C, whereas it was 32°C on the corresponding date last year.
The minister further stated that no area in Delhi has experienced power cuts lasting more than two hours this year, whereas last year there were 147 instances of outages exceeding two hours.
