A 20-year-old youth accused in a murder case, who has been absconding since the crime took place, was arrested from the Badarpur area here, an official said on Tuesday.

According to the police, the accused, identified as Ashad, was nabbed from Katewara village by a team. “The accused was wanted for his involvement in the murder case that took place on August 17. The deceased, Kuldeep Singh, was a resident of Bindapur,” they said.

Earlier, the nephew of Singh, Bunty, disclosed in his complaint that the deceased had an argument with two men, Ritik and Munna resulting in a scuffle. Ritik, in a fit of rage, allegedly stabbed Singh in his chest with a knife provided by an associate, Bunty, as reportedly mentioned in his statement. Singh was immediately shifted to the BM Gupta Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival by the attending doctors.

With this information, a case was registered, and an investigation was taken up by the team, the officer said.

During the investigation, the police arrested two accused, Pawan and Munna while others had been absconding since.

“On Monday, our team received secret information that Ashad, who had been at large, would be visiting Katewara village to meet his associates. A trap was laid, and the accused was apprehended,” a senior police officer said.

Ashad has previously been booked in a robbery and abduction-for-ransom case that was registered at the Vikaspuri Police Station in May.

In that case, the complainant, Ajay Kumar, was allegedly intercepted by five men while returning home in his car near Gujranwala Apartments. He was assaulted, and his car was taken away.

The officer said during sustained questioning, Ashad disclosed that he studied up to Class 12 and is the eldest among his siblings, unmarried and addicted to alcohol. To evade arrest, he worked intermittently at a garment shop in Uttam Nagar and frequently changed his locations and mobile numbers, the police mentioned further.

Further investigation into this case is ongoing by the officer, and efforts are being made to arrest those who are at large.
