To ensure swift and coordinated flood management during Monsoon 2025, Home Minister Ashish Sood chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday with the District Magistrates (DMs) of North-East, Shahdara, and East Delhi.
The meeting focused on reviewing flood preparedness in the vulnerable Trans-Yamuna region.
As part of the city’s comprehensive monsoon response, a central flood control room was operationalised on June 15 at the East District Magistrate’s office, according to an official document from the department. It will serve as the nerve center for city-wide coordination during flood emergencies.
Under the minister’s leadership, three sector committees have been constituted, each led by a DM. These committees will streamline coordination between key departments, including Revenue, I & FC, MCD, Delhi Jal Board, DUSIB, Police, Health, and PWD.
District authorities outlined their detailed action plans in case of a flood-like situation. The North-East Delhi DM reported real-time monitoring of Yamuna water levels, evacuation strategies, identification of relief camp sites, and deployment of 14 rescue boats and 26 pumps. During the meeting, officials informed Sood that warning levels based on releases from the Hathni Kund Barrage provide a 36-hour lead time for response.
The East Delhi DM added that vulnerable flood points have been mapped, flood warning networks are fully active, and a traffic circulation plan is in place. Flood control teams are equipped and are on standby, noted the senior officials.
The I&FC Chief Engineer highlighted that 23 permanent and several mobile pumps are ready for flood water management across the region. All embankments and floodgates have been inspected and are operational.
Sood directed all DMs to follow a checklist-based flood response protocol, ensuring timely evacuation, shelter, food, and security for affected residents. He emphasized 24×7 patrolling and deployment of nodal officers at waterlogging hotspots.
“If the Yamuna crosses 204.5 meters, immediate evacuation must begin,” the Minister said, adding that he will personally visit the Central Control Rooms to review real-time preparations.
