Delhi successfully met an all-time high peak power demand of 8,748 MW on Monday, surpassing the previous record of 8,656 MW.
Describing the achievement as a milestone, Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood said the feat demonstrated the strength of the city’s power infrastructure and reflected the government’s efforts to upgrade the electricity network.
“Today, Delhi made history by successfully meeting an all-time high peak power demand of 8,748 MW, surpassing the previous record by nearly 100 MW. The earlier all-time high of 8,656 MW was recorded on June 19, 2024,” Sood said.
He said the achievement marked a departure from the frequent power outages and grid vulnerabilities witnessed in the past.
“The real achievement today is not just the record-breaking power demand, but the fact that the entire city functioned seamlessly. Our robust power network remained stable, with zero breakdowns or major infrastructure failures,” the minister said.
Sood also criticised the previous dispensation, alleging that it focused on political theatrics while allowing the city’s core infrastructure to deteriorate.
He attributed the successful handling of the record peak demand to the government’s meticulous Power Master Plan and sustained investments in strengthening Delhi’s transmission and distribution network.
The minister said the present government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is systematically addressing long-standing structural deficiencies and shortcomings that it claims were inherited from the previous administration. According to him, these deficiencies had resulted in frequent power disruptions and other infrastructure-related issues, particularly during periods of peak electricity demand.
