Police on Friday arrested a 41-year-old man in outer north Delhi for allegedly stabbing his nephew to death and attacking his elder brother following an altercation with their father, officials said.

According to the police, the incident occurred on the night of September 14 at Guru Nanak Dev Colony, where Jitender, who resides with his elderly mother, allegedly attacked his nephews, Akash Giri (28) and his elder brother Abhilash, with a knife after a heated argument.

“Rohan was taken to BJRM Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His brother, Rohit, who survived the attack with serious injuries, is undergoing treatment,” said DCP (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami.

Investigation into the case revealed that Jitender had a record of frequent disputes with his sister’s family.

“About a month ago, while the family was in Uttarakhand, an argument broke out between Jitender and Rohit, during which Jitender physically assaulted him. After the incident, Jitender compelled Rohit to leave his house,” the DCP said.

Rohit had to move into a rented accommodation in nearby Guru Nanak Dev Colony, further straining family ties.

Around 10 pm on Sunday, Jitender had a heated exchange with his brother-in-law, Hari Giri, the father of Rohan and Rohit and the complainant in the case. On receiving the information, Rohit and Rohan went to Jitender’s house to intervene, but he allegedly attacked both the brothers with a knife before fleeing the spot, the DCP said.

The police have registered a case under relevant provisions of law and launched a search operation.

Based on CCTV footage and technical surveillance, the accused has been traced and arrested. The knife used in the crime was also recovered, the officer said, adding that the accused has been remanded to judicial custody.
