As part of the Paryavarn Mitra initiative to improve conditions of the Vivekanand (Sindhi) Park, the volunteers from the Paryavaran Mitra programme, and a group of committed neighbourhood residents came together on Sunday to clean up and beautify the park with support from the Delhi Government.

Environment Advisor Reena Gupta launched the cleaning drive and motivated the residents of the area to come forward in large numbers. The purpose of the event was to serve as a model so that district coordinators for the Paryavaran Mitra programme and the Vidhan Sabha may replicate it in their respective constituencies.

On Sunday morning, a variety of activities, including garbage removal, landscaping, and sapling plantation, were carried out as part of the event. Along with the cleanup work, Paryavaran Mitras pledged to take up park cleaning activities in their neighbourhood on January 26 and to engage more community volunteers in taking individual environmental action.

Gupta remarked, “We are happy to have the support of so many local leaders and citizens in this effort to improve our city. We think that by working together, we can significantly enhance the environment’s overall aesthetic and quality.”

The Paryavaran Mitra programme, a community volunteer and leadership initiative, was launched on July 7, 2022, by Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai. The Delhi government’s Paryavaran Mitra initiative encourages residents to volunteer their time to help Delhi’s environment.

The programme aims to create an active volunteer network at the hyper-local level to improve governance procedures and boost citizen engagement in order to address civic and environmental challenges in Delhi. Through the initiative, citizen volunteers can participate in actions across themes like waste management, air quality improvement, cleaning Yamuna, etc.

On Sunday, community leaders such as Lokesh Parashar and numerous others offered their support and urged their constituents to participate. In addition to having a positive influence on the area, they encouraged locals to participate in the clean-up as part of the Paryavaran Mitra programme.
