Delhi’ PWD minister Parvesh Verma on Saturday directed officials for maintenance of the Munak Canal, the installation of smart street lights and other ongoing works.
The minister said that it is the government’s priority to ensure well managed and clean water resources for the people of the national capital.
Notably, Munak Canal is one of the important sources of water for the national capital, and for its better management and upkeep, Verma chaired a meeting with the Delhi Jal Board, PWD officials.
There are several initiatives that the government is planning to ensure safety, cleanliness and protection of the important water source, which supplies drinking water to Delhi.
It is a critically important water channel for the national capital coming from Haryana, that feeds the Haiderpur Water Treatment Plant, and this crucial water channel faces several issues like alleged water theft, pollution and other challenges, which the government is now working to address on a priority.
The minister also met PWD officials to discuss the project for installation of smart LED street lights on the roads that fall under the department’s responsibility.
Plan is to install smart LED lights on the roads that are more efficient and energy saving compared to the conventional street lights, while being even cost effective.
Under this initiative, the older street lights will be replaced, while new lights will be installed at the dark spots, and notably, it is estimated that a total of 96000 street lights are to be changed or installed under this initiative.
This project is also aimed at enhancing road safety, and will also pave the way for making Delhi moving in the direction of becoming a smart city.
In addition to these, the minister also met with several organisations in a bid to mobilise CSR funds towards projects of public service in different areas.
Effective public-private partnership is something important to achieve people’ welfare objectives, the minister had stated.
The government is also working on a model, under which the spaces under flyovers in the city can be better maintained and also used in different ways, while at several such locations , beautification works can also be carried out.
