The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has issued a notice to the deputy commissioner of the excise department to shift the liquor shop situated near the municipal corporation school in Rohini’s Sector-20. The commission’s chairperson Swati Maliwal has asked the excise department to also submit a report on the matter within seven days.

According to the DCW spokesperson, the commission had previously notified the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) to file a report on the liquor shop near the school. “The SDM noted in his report that the space between the liquor shop and the school’s back wall is less than ten metres. The SDM also reported that due to the liquor shop, the atmosphere was turning noxious and impacting the school children. Even in the report drafted by the SDM, he has called for shifting the liquor shop from the school,” said the spokesperson.

Earlier, the guardians of the students, along with the principal and teachers of the school had filed a complaint about the liquor shop to the Delhi Commission for Women.

“They also noted in their complaint that in 2014, there were 872 students in the school, but due to the liquor shop, more and more people are taking their children out of the school. In  2017, only 548 students remain. The teachers said the liquor shop is attached to the back wall of the school. And due to this reason, drunken men pass lewd comments on the lady teachers of the school. The teachers and students, therefore, have stopped going to the playground of the school,” said the DCW spokesperson.

They also complained that during opening and closing hours of the school, when mothers of the students drop in, drunkards at the liquor shop misbehave with them. Miscreants have also been found to throw empty liquor bottles in the school property.

“The commission’s chairperson asked for a report from the local SDM over the issue, and after the report she has notified the excise department to shift the liquor shop somewhere else,” said the DCW spokesperson.
