Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal on Friday wrote to all MPs, seeking support for her demand on the death penalty to child rapists within six months.

According to DCW, Maliwal has requested them to join and support the movement – and raise the matter in the Parliament.

The DCW Chief has also sought appointment from certain women MPs like Ministers Maneka Gandhi, Sushma Swaraj, Nirmala Sitharaman, former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Jaya Bachchan and many others to seek their support for the movement.

“The letter apprises the Parliamentarians of the rape of an 8 month old baby in the capital. It further informs them of the ongoing working agitation of DCW- Satyagraha – wherein DCW Chief has not returned home since the past 23 nights and will not go back home till International Women’s Day – to urge the system for creating strong deterrence against child rapes,” said DCW in a statement.

“We will not turn a blind eye towards rapes of little girls. I think it’s the duty of the Commission to struggle for systemic changes and we will not leave any stone unturned to achieve the same. I think people of all political parties should come together to ensure safety of women and girls in the country. I am hopeful that we will get support in the matter across regions and ideologies,” said Maliwal.

“DCW is demanding that a robust criminal justice system be set up in the country, which ensures that cases of sexual crimes against women and children are tried within 6 months and rapists of children are accorded death penalty. Such exemplary punishments need to be given, so that next time no one would dare to rape a child,” she added.
