Curfew remained imposed and internet services suspended in parts of Shillong a day after an argument between a woman and a bus conductor escalated into violent clashes between two groups.

The Army had conducted a flag march in some parts of the Meghalaya capital late on Friday even as police tried to bring the tense situation under control.

On Saturday Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district, Peter S Dkhar, told IANS that the situation is still tense and the Army is on standby.

There was no report of violence from any part of the city during the night-long curfew imposed in 11 localities, including Lum Dieng Jri Police Station and Cantonment Beat House, of the city on Friday morning.

Clashes between a group of bus drivers and residents of Them Metor area erupted after an argument between some women and the driver of SPTS bus. The incident happened on Thursday.

But the situation turned grim after rumours of a bus handyman succumbing to injuries received in an assault by residents spread on social media. Police had to fire teargas shells to disperse the mob.

Four persons, including a journalist and the handyman, were injured in the clash. All four were treated for injuries and released by a hospital.

Later on Friday night, police picked up many youths who were allegedly found instigating a mob.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to inquire into the incident as well as to identify the elements spreading rumours and inciting violence.

A government communiqué appealed people to maintain calm.

“It has been observed that false news and propaganda played a vital role in raising tempers and inciting violence. The members of the public are requested to remain calm and not to fall prey to rumours,” reads the communiqué.
