Calcutta University (CU) has embarked on a unique endeavour to engage in community service and has decided to adopt a slum in the city. The university has identified the slum in ward-44, Giribabu Lane, where slum children will on a regular basis be provided with basic amenities, food, medical check-up, educational attires as well as an annual excursion.

In the Syndicate meeting held recently, it was decided that CU will provide support to the slum children of below poverty level including giving them books, helping them their school work, organising health awareness camp.

The university will also provide them with food twice a week and buy new clothes for them. The university will engage four students and former students of the university can also get involved, the university said.

The final decision will be arrived at after an interview. The vice-chancellor of the university, Ms Sonali Chakravorty Banerjee, said: “We have identified this slum and we want to reach out to the children of the area. As we are trying to achieve excellence in the field of education, it is our humble effort to give back to our society. The children of the slum, we know, need academic assistance and we want to ensure that these children get the academic help they need.”

Meanwhile, the Syndicate has also show caused two students who were agitating few days ago in Rajabazar Science College. Both the students ~ Sayantan Banerjee and Subrata Ghosh ~ have been asked as to why they will be granted permission to sit for their upcoming exams after they gheraoed their professors, misbehaved with them and illtreated them.
