Three CRPF troopers were injured on Wednesday when their vehicle was hit by another vehicle in the Nowgam area on the outskirts of Srinagar. Jammu and Kashmir Police confirmed the incident and said the driver involved has been arrested.
Details of the collision
The injured personnel belonged to D Company of the CRPF’s 148th Battalion. They had been deployed for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra near the Taingan Bypass in the Nowgam area at the time of the incident.
A police official said the driver responsible was arrested shortly after the accident took place. The injured troopers were immediately shifted to Ujala Cygnus Hospital in Nowgam, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Police have registered a case in connection with the incident, and further investigation is currently underway.
Second such incident in a week
This marks the second such incident involving CRPF personnel in just over a week. Last week, seven CRPF personnel were injured near a tunnel in the Sonmarg area of Ganderbal district after their vehicle’s driver lost control of the wheel and it skidded off the road.
In that earlier incident, the injured jawans were administered first aid at the scene.
CRPF’s role during the Amarnath yatra
The CRPF is responsible for managing security along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, also known as NH-44, ensuring secure and smooth passage for pilgrims undertaking the Amarnath Yatra.
Ahead of this year’s Yatra, the force has put in place a robust security plan aimed at safeguarding pilgrims travelling along NH-44.
Security coverage beyond the highway
Beyond the highway itself, the CRPF also manages security from Jammu all the way to the two base camps located at Baltal and Pahalgam. This includes coverage of transit camps at Mirbazar in south Kashmir, along with Saidpora and Manigam in north Kashmir.
This wider security responsibility is carried out jointly with the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
