In what is said to be a reminiscent of Robinson Street case of living with corpse for three long years, police on Thursday unearthed a body of a mother from an industrial refrigerator from her residence on 25 S N Chatterjee Road, James Long Sarani, Behala.

Her son and husband had been detained for interrogation. According to Police a body of a woman Bina Majumdar (88) was recovered from a refrigerator from her residence after she was allegedly “preserved” there by her son Suvobrata Majumdar (55) after her death way back in 2015.

An officer of the homicide wing of Kolkata police investigating the incident on Thursday said that the body of Bina Majumdar was found to be in a grisly condition with her being torn apart and the entrails being removed.

The body is suspected to have been preserved with chemicals as cans of chemicals had been seized from the residence. The chemicals had been sent to Forensic laboratory for further tests.

According to neighbours of Majumdar, although they were aware of Bina Majumdar’s death, they were under the impression that her body had been kept at Peace Haven as Gopal Majumdar, husband of the deceased used to tell them more often that as his son Suvarata could not come to terms with his mother’s death, her body was kept at Peace Haven.

Another officer who is also a part of the investigation said that allegations of impersonating her mother’s signature to withdraw her pension is also being investigated. “We will probe thoroughly. The bank from which he is alleged to have withdrawn his mother’s pension by dint of forgery is also under scanner. We will also conduct a psycho analytical test of the son to get to the bottom of the truth,” joint commissioner of police (Crime) Pravin Tripathi said.

According to an officer of the Behala police station investigating the case, acting on a tip off, a team of officers raided the house and discovered the body from the refrigerator bought for the sole purpose of preserving the body.

Jt CP Crime Pravin Tripathi said that preliminary investigation revealed that Suvobrata was mentally deranged. He told investigators that he was under the illusion of getting back her mother’s life if he could preserve her body. “We got the information from his cousin sister that his mother’s body was preserved in the refrigerator.”

“He had reportedly told the investigators that his mother had told him that preservation of body could bring back one’s life. So he had done this.” Suvobrata (55) was a leather technologist by profession. He used to work at a multinational company at Bantala. But he had relinquished his job five years ago. His parents were employees of FCI.
