Cops call for checking radicalisation of youth via social media

Stressing on the need for increased information sharing between the Police and Intelligence agencies, Chiefs of Himachal Pradesh Police, Armed Police and Intelligence agencies called for checking radicalisation of youth through social media platforms.

Director General of Police (DGP), HP, Sanjay Kumar during the Northern Region Coordination Committee meeting held here on Friday, called for increased and closer co-ordination between Police and Central law enforcing agencies.

Kumar said checking of terror related issues as overstay by foreigners and refugees is the need of the hour to contain sleeper cells and prevent youth from falling prey to anti-national elements. “Further, there was need for increased monitoring of social media platforms to curb radicalisation of youth. Further there was the need for developing strategies to tackle cyber frauds and misuse of social media by unscrupulous elements,” he said.

Kumar also stressed on the need for adopting effective strategies to decrease the use of drugs especially by college students and said effective investigation in drug smuggling cases is required to seize properties earned through drug trade.

“The Police and Intelligence agencies should develop methods to check involvement of foreigners in drug trade and sharing of intelligence on the issue is also required to curb inter-state drug smuggling,” he added.

The meeting was attended by Police officials from Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and officials from Central agencies as BSF, CISF, RPF, SSB, NSG, NIA and CBI. The officials appreciated the efforts of HP police for amendments in Drug and Cosmetics Act and the cannabis eradication campaign.
