Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golchha on Wednesday awarded an out-of-turn promotion to constable Kartar Singh of Malviya Nagar Police Station, elevating him to the rank of head constable for his courage during a late-night confrontation with a burglary gang.

At a ceremony at Police Headquarters, Golchha felicitated Singh, calling his actions “a remarkable example for the force.”

Singh had been deployed on patrol duty in the early hours of August 1 to prevent house break-ins in south Delhi’s residential areas. Around 4 a.m., near Asiad Village in Hauz Khas, he spotted three men on a motorcycle behaving suspiciously. When asked to stop, they sped off, triggering a high-speed chase across several colonies that lasted nearly 30 minutes.

The pursuit ended in Khel Gaon, where the suspects attacked Singh with iron rods, striking him on the head. His helmet absorbed the blows, preventing serious injury. Outnumbered but undeterred, Singh fired a warning shot into the air. When the attackers continued, he fired again, wounding one of them, later identified as Sikander, in the leg.

With the help of private security guards, Singh managed to overpower all three suspects, identified as Sikander, Darshan Singh, and Vijender Singh. Police recovered their motorcycle and burglary tools. Interrogation revealed the trio’s involvement in several house burglaries and plans for more.

A case regarding this has been registered at the Hauz Khas Police Station, an officer said.
