Congress team visits home of custodial death victim

A team of Congress leaders led by Jayadev Jena former president of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) visited the house of Abinash Munda who died inside Ainthapali police station last week under mysterious circumstances and declared that the Congress ST/SC Cell will stage protests at Delhi demanding a judicial probe by a sitting judge of the High Court.

They demanded Rs. 30 lakh compensation to the family members and alleged it was a case of custodial death. The Congress team further said that they would sit in Dharna in Jantar Mantar at New Delhi on 25 February to protest the death of a youth in police custody. “During Naveen’s regime, police atrocity on innocent people has increased manifold,” alleged Jena and other members of the team.

A delegation of Congress leaders will meet the President of India in this regard and the complete collapse of law and order machinery in the state, said former MP Pradeep Majhi. The Congress termed the death of Abinash as ‘murder’ and rubbished the police version of suicide.

It may be recalled that the police had detained Abinash in connection with a theft case on 9 February and the same night he was found dead at the thana premises. The next morning irate people set the Ainthapali police station ablaze, damaged innumerable vehicles and paralysed the highway for several hours.

The mob took over the entire area. The state government promptly suspended three policemen an orered a robe by the Human Rights Protection Cell.
