Congress party has expressed concern over the safety of three Himachali youth kidnapped in Nigeria and have demanded their release.

Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) chief Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu on Sunday sought Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur’s intervention to ensure the early release of the three Himachali youth on his own level.

He suggested the Chief Minister to meet the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to ensure early release of the victims from the custody of the Nigerian pirates as the family of all the victims are aggrieved.

One of the youths had also contacted for their release, hence the chief minister should pursue it with the central government for their release, he added.

“Just as the BJP ex-Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Shanta Kumar had written to External Affairs Minister, similarly Jai Ram Thakur should personally contact Sushma Swaraj. Shanta Kumar has contacted her through written communiqué and also talked to her telephonically,” he said.

The three man from Kangra district, were serving in Merchant Navy and had been  reportedly kidnapped by Nigerian pirates along with their ship three days ago, said Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, adding that the pirates were demanding ransom.

They have been identified as Ajay Kumar from Palampur, Pankaj Kumar from Samloti village and Sushil Kumar from Nagrota Surian.

The pirates have demanded 11 million Nigerian Naira (Rs 20 lakh) for their release.
