A day after reports of a rift in the Madhya Pradesh Congress over nomination of certain leaders in the recently formed party committees, MP Congress Coordination Committee chairman Digvijay Singh said on Thursday that he and all 12 members of the committee would take out a statewide yatra to unify Congress workers and leaders across the state.

Addressing media persons after the first meeting of the coordination committee at the MP Congress Committee (MPCC) headquarters here, the former Madhya Pradesh CM said that daily during the yatra, they would bring all Congress workers and leaders of a place together and have food with all of them while establishing a strong bond of unity in the party.

Singh said the yatra was aimed at ending all differences among leaders and workers of the party once and for all, to ensure the party’s full strength to defeat the ruling BJP in the state assembly polls scheduled for the end of this year.

The yatra would begin on 31 May from Orchha in Tikamgarh district after offering prayers at the famous Ram Raja Temple there. It would end on 31 August, after covering all districts of the state.

On Wednesday, a controversy had erupted over the inclusion of Congress leader from Mandsaur, Rajendra Singh Gautam, in the coordination committee, headed by Digvijay Singh.

Former Lok Sabha MP Meenakshi Natrajan, considered close to Rahul Gandhi, had reportedly expressed serious objection to Gautam’s inclusion in the committee.

Gautam had stood as an independent candidate against Natrajan in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, after he was denied ticket. Consequently, Gautam had been expelled from the party for a period of six years.

The 13-member coordination committee headed by Digvijay Singh includes Congress leaders Mahesh Joshi, Rameshwar Neekhra, Mujeeb Qureshi, Satyavrat Chaturvedi, Bisahu Lal Singh, Vinay Dubey, Rajendra Singh Gautam, Harsingh Narvaria, Mahendra Joshi, Sohan Balmiki, Vibha Patel and Sunil Sood.

Digvijay Singh pointed out that none of the committee members would contest the state assembly elections.
