Cong presents `7.5 lakh to transporter’s family

Congress leader Indira Hirdayesh with family members of transporter Prakash Pandey in Haldwani on Tuesday.

The BJP government in Uttarakhand failed miserably to control the damage after a debt-ridden transporter consumed poison before attending a Janta Durbar of a cabinet minister in Dehradun last month.

After the death of the businessman Prakash Pandey, the Nainital district magistrate and other BJP leaders announced providing Rs 10 Lakh as compensation to the affected family. By providing Rs 2 Lakh to Pandey family the BJP gave a chance to Congress to make the death a political issue.

The Pandey family launched an agitation against the state government five days back, at Haldwani in district Nainital, for not fulfilling the promise made after the transporter’s death. For five days the protest of the transporter family created headlines.

On an appeal made by senior Congress leader and leader of the opposition Indira Hirdayesh the protesting family withdrew their agitation. Indira collected Rs 7.5 Lakh donation from Haldwani people to present to the affected Pandey family on Tuesday.

Indira Hirdayesh said, “The episode shows in the inhumane face of the state government. We will be taking the case to high court.”

The Trivendra Rawat government found itself in a tight spot after making the announcement as they had received suicide threat letter from about a dozen people. A hurt Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Rawat even claimed, “Committing suicide has become some sort of a fashion,” in a public meeting recently.

The Nainital District Magistrate Dependra Chaudhary made a hasty announcement without confirming from the state government and by receiving information from BJP leader & MLA from Kaladhungi, Bansi Dhar Bhagat.

Even Bansi Dhar Bhagat and Uttarakhand BJP president Ajay Bhatt made similar claims about the ex-gratia amount to be provided to Prakesh Pandey’s family. The issue turned hostile with the CM office denying making any commitment and providing ex-gratia amount according to norms.

The promise was to provide Rs 10 Lakh and job to one member of the family. Now the Congress has assured of providing more financial support and also private job to Kamla, transporter’s wife.

The Pandey family was deeply hurt with the death and even declined conducting funeral of the transporter. After receiving assurances from many people they performed the last rites. The Congress collected Rs 7.5 Lakh to present to the Pandey family. The donation was collected through Congress leaders and businessmen.
