If the Congress wants to stop BJP from ciming to power again in the upcoming Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, it will have to join hands with the Samajwadi Party, said its state unit chief, Gauri Singh Yadav, on Wednesday.

He told The Statesman that SP has a strong base in Gwalior-Chambal, Bundelkhand and Vindhya regions of the state adjoining the Uttar Pradesh border. In the 2003 Assembly elections, SP had won 7 seats, Yadav pointed out, and secured second position in 14 assembly constituencies.

“If Congress had contested the 2003 Assembly polls along with Samajwadi Party then Digvijay Singh would have become a third-term chief minister because his party had fallen behind by only 1 per cent votes to achieve power, while our party got 2.5 per cent votes,” said Yadav.

“Our party leadership has not given any instructions in this regard but we have informed them about the situation in the state. We hope the central unit of the party will soon decide,” Yadav added.

He accused Amar Singh, who was expelled from the SP, of trying to weaken the party in Madhya Pradesh.

SP had won Roun (in Bhind district), Datia, Chandla (Chhatarpur district), Bedan (Singrauli district), Multai (Betul district), Pipariya (Itarsi district) and Sidhi assembly constituencies in 2003.

There is speculation about an alliance of Congress, BSP, SP and Gondwana Gadtantra Party, after state Congress chief Kamal Nath and election campaign committee chairman for Madhya Pradesh, Jyotiraditya Scindia hinted at such a probability. Both leaders have announced that the doors of Congress were opened for like-minded parties to stop the BJP in the state. Scindia has said seat sharing would not be a hurdle.
