Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday inaugurated a series of civic works in Shalimar Bagh and a new multi-level parking facility in Greater Kailash, projects the government said were aimed at easing civic and traffic problems in the capital.

The civic works in Shalimar Bagh were taken up under the ongoing Seva Pakhwada being observed to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday.

Officials said the projects include new sewer lines, repairs to existing ones, dense road carpeting, installation of semi-high mast lighting and park improvements. The upgrades carry an estimated cost of nearly Rs 65 lakh, of which about Rs 15 lakh has been allotted for road carpeting, Rs 26 lakh for sewer and drainage improvements in Pitampura, and another Rs 24 lakh for lighting and park development.

Gupta also inaugurated an automated multi-level parking facility in Greater Kailash’s M Block market. The project, built at a cost of Rs 63.74 crore, can house 399 vehicles and will be run under a 10-year operation and maintenance plan, officials said. Spread over seven levels and a basement, the facility is fully automated and designed to ease parking woes in the busy market area.

“Parking is a major issue in Delhi. It causes traffic jams and road chaos. Disputes often arise among people. Our government is making every effort to address Delhi’s parking problem. We believe that parking facilities should be provided wherever technology is available,” Gupta said, adding that the government has committed to building 100 such facilities across the city.

Officials said the fully automated shuttle-type system requires no human intervention for parking or retrieval of cars. The facility is also equipped with a 1.5 lakh litre underground water tank and firefighting provisions.
