CJI Ranjan Gogoi proposes ‘happiness classes’ in judicial academies

“It was a brilliant concept to have happiness classes. I have thought about exploring the same in our judicial academies as well. I am yet to consult my colleagues, but I am sure we can introduce it across judicial academies after hearing students from the audience share their learnings,” CJI Gogoi said.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday proposed the introduction of “happiness classes” in judicial academies across the country on the lines of the “happiness curriculum” and “happiness classes” introduced by the Delhi government in its schools.

“It was a brilliant concept to have happiness classes. I have thought about exploring the same in our judicial academies as well. I am yet to consult my colleagues, but I am sure we can introduce it across judicial academies after hearing students from the audience share their learnings,” CJI Gogoi said.

Chief Justice Gogoi said, “As the CJI, I was thinking the other day if I have a happy lot of people in the country, my problem of litigation will be over. There will be no cases because everyone will be happy. People are so unhappy that there are a huge number of litigations pending which go on for years leaving people further unhappy. Without happiness, education can never be complete.”

He added that “If at the end of the day we are not happy, we cannot contribute and this is the importance of the concept of happiness classes that has been introduced in Delhi schools. This is very important considering India’s ranking on the Happiness Index which has dropped to 141, while last year it was at 133”.

The event marked the culmination of the 15-day-long “Happiness Utsav” being celebrated in the Delhi government-run schools.

The “happiness curriculum”, launched by the AAP government in Delhi schools, reportedly focuses on holistic education by including meditation, value education and mental exercises in the conventional education curriculum. It has been introduced for the students from Nursery to Class 8 in government schools in the national capital.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, deputy CM and education minister Manish Sisodia, and education ministers of seven other states also participated in this “happiness education conference” at Talkatora Stadium.
