CID charge sheets four in Darj cop murder case

The CID forwarded a chargesheet against four persons, who are accused of killing police officer Amitabha Malik, to the Lower Division Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Darjeeling on Thursday. The investigation agency had taken over the case in October last year.

The charge-sheets reached the Darjeeling Sadar Police Station in the evening, where sources said the papers will be filed in the court on Friday.

CID officials said the four accused, Suraj Pradhan, Shyam Kami, Mahindra Kami and Dewraj Lepcha, belong to the Gorkhaland Personnel (GLP), a volunteer force of the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM). Shyam, Mahindra and Dewraj are residents of Alipurduar district and they were arrested on 31 October, while Suraj was arrested later.

The Alipurduar trio was at the place where Bimal Gurung had camped when police raided it at Barnesbeg in Darjeeling, CID sources said.

The police officer was killed in a gunfight during a search operation to nab the elusive GJMM leader, who is accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, near the Little Rangit river in a forest area near the Bengal-Sikkim border on 13 October.

“The CID has submitted the chargesheet against the four persons ~ Suraj Pradhan, Shyam Kami, Mahindra Kami and Dewraj Lepcha ~ in connection with the killing of Amitabha Malik in the chief Judicial Magistrate Lower Division Court in Darjeeling,” said special superintendent (North) of the CID, Ajay Prasad.

The charges have been framed for murder, and under the Arms Act, Explosive Substance Act, and others, it is learnt. “The charge-sheet will be filed in the court most likely tomorrow or the day after,” Assistant Public Prosecutor, Darjeeling, Pankaj Prasad, said. Meanwhile, the Siliguri additional chief judicial magistrate court remanded Dawa Sherpa in police custody on Thursady.

Mr Sherpa was arrested by the CID from Bagdogra in Siliguri yesterday for his alleged involvement in the attack on police, and the violence and rioting in the Hills during the recent bout of the Gorkhaland agitation.
