A non-bailable case has been filed against the Kerala professor accused of making derogatory remakrs for female students at a college. The professor, Jouhar Munavvir, of Farook Training College allegedly compared the dressing style of Muslim girl students’ to sliced watermelons.

According to reports, a case against Munavvir was registered at the Koduvally police station under sections 354, 509(a) of the Indian Penal Code.

Munavvir, a teacher of Social Studies Education in the college, had during a counselling session allegedly commented that Muslim girls wear leggings underneath purdah which they  pull up to reveal the leggings.

“One of the body parts that man is highly attracted to is a woman’s bosom. That’s why it should be covered. But our girls reveal a part of their bosom. Like how we slice a melon open and see the ripe part inside. This style of wearing the muftah is not Islamic,” he allegedly said.

His comments went viral on social media with many women protesting while holding watermelons. Various students unions, including Muslim Students Federation (MSF) of the college, reportedly held marches demanding action against the professor.
