Carmel case: School authorities meet guardians

A day after the incident of alleged sexual molestation of a class two student of Carmel primary school exposed several loop-holes in the security maintenance, the school authorities convened a meeting with the guardians on Saturday.

A team of 12 guardianson Saturday met the school authorities where several demands to upgrade the safety of the school was placed. The guardians on Saturday demanded that CCTV cameras be installed inside the campus with immediate effect and identification cards should be issued to the students . Additionally, parents also demanded that male teachers cannot be appointed in the school.

The parents also urged the school to keep a female attendant at all times. Moreover, the guardians want the school should convene meetings with them at regular intervals. The school authorities said they have taken note of of the parents demands and will provide concrete answers by Monday.

Tapash Sen, guardian of a student of the school present at the meeting said, “We have pointed out several lapses in the security and asked them to take measures to address those loopholes.” However a section of parents were seen still miffed at the school. “I wonder whether the school authorities are at all sorry for this utter negligence in security measures,” a mother of a student said.

Principal of the school Sister Shilpa said, “ It is a very unfortunate incident. We request the parents to cooperate with us. We will hold classes from Monday. We have taken account of their demands.” Minister of women and child development and social welfare, Dr Sashi Panja on Saturday said, “It( molestation) is a social evil. There is a need to teach girls about good touch and bad touch. It is equally important for parents to teach boys from a young age to respect a woman. Teachers and school authority should also be alert.”

Meanwhile, a 44-year- old resident of Kalighat, Ritesh Kumar Ray was arrested on Saturday for allegedly injuring an officer-in-charge of Tollygunge police station during clashes between police and guardians yesterday.
Soumen Rana,19-year-old school teacher accused of molesting the girl,was on Saturday remanded to police custody for three days in Alipore Court. The girl victim underwent medical tests at SSKM yesterday and will reportedly be giving her testimony to a magistrate under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code within the next couple of days.
