A group of miscreants on Sunday set on fire three rice-laden lorries at Hili in South Dinajpur. The lorries were partly damaged as drivers and conductors managed to douse the flames. An FIR was filed against the miscreants at the Hili police station by the South Dinajpur Truck Owners’ Association on Monday. Hili police said they have started investigations.

It is learnt that the three lorries, parked along National Highway-512 suddenly caught fire, but that the drivers and their assistants somehow managed to bring the fire on control. Police too rushed to the spot, it is learnt. The secretary of the District  Truck Owners’ Association on Monday filed the FIR and sought more security for lorries and drivers who wait to enter Bangladesh through the Hili border.

“Thousands of loaded trucks await before entering the Bangladesh side. From Patiram to Hili, (20 km), thousands of such lorries queue up on the road towards Bangladesh for 10- 20 days at a stretch sometimes. There is a truck terminal at Balupara in Hili; the terminus however cannot accommodate more than 180-200 trucks and the excess vehicles wait on the road at their own risk,” said a lorry driver.

The group of miscreants targeted some lorries parked on the unmanned area in the border on Sunday.” Security for the loaded trucks should be upped in Hili. This is the first time in Hili that cases of attacks on vehicles have come to the fore.

We demand police administration to be more active in cases like these,” a lorry owner of Hili, Prathik Guha, said. Secretary of the District Truck Owners’ Association Gangesh Kumar Saha said, “Some criminals set ablaze three trucks. However, the truck drivers and cleaners managed to save the vehicles. It is a planned attack and a group of people are trying to create nuisance in Hili.” “We have received a complaint from the truck owners association. Hili police have started investigations, while patrolling on the highway will be intensified,” said the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sawmajit Barua.
