Body of missing man recovered after two days in flood-hit northeast Delhi

The Delhi Police on Friday recovered the body of a man who had been missing for two days from flood-hit Garhi Mendhu village in northeast Delhi, officials said.

According to the police, the deceased was identified as Ombir, a resident of the village.

A senior officer stated that they had received information on Wednesday about a possible drowning incident in Garhi Mendhu.

During the inquiry, it was found that Ombir had last been seen around 8:30 am that day while travelling from Pusta Road towards the village. However, no eyewitness confirmed seeing him drown, the officer added.

Based on the inputs, a search operation was launched in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local residents.

“Despite multiple search attempts, Ombir could not be located. On Friday, around 11 am, a police team, assisted by rescue personnel, resumed the search near the village and eventually recovered his body,” the officer said.

The body was taken to GTB Hospital for post-mortem. Police said legal formalities have been completed, and further investigation is underway.

Several areas of northeast Delhi, particularly villages along the Yamuna, have been affected by flooding following last week’s heavy rainfall.

Delhi Police, along with rescue agencies, continue to carry out search operations in low-lying areas to assist stranded residents and trace missing persons.
