Train services on the Bahadurgarh side of Nangloi Railway Station were disrupted on Friday afternoon due to protests by locals after two minor girls were struck by a speeding train, officials said on Friday.
According to the Delhi Police, the incident took place at around 1:00 pm near Sukhi Nahar, between kilometer poles 18/03–05 on the UP line.
“A PCR call regarding the accident was received at 1:34 pm in a local police station,” a senior police officer said.
With the information, a team from the local police station and the Government Railway Police (GRP) rushed to the scene.
A senior police officer mentioned that, during the initial investigation, it was found that train no. 12485 hit the children while they were crossing the tracks. The victims, a seven-year-old resident of Pripatari Enclave and an eight-year-old from Delhi’s Vats Sharda Enclave, suffered critical injuries and were immediately shifted to the hospital.
As soon as the information about the accident was received by the residents from different localities in the area, over 500-700 people gathered at the site, blocking the railway track, bringing the train services on the routes to an abrupt halt.
“Due to the gathering, several trains were delayed as a result of which commuters had to face inconveniences,” a police officer said on condition of anonymity.
During an inquiry conducted by the officer, eyewitnesses told him that the protesters raised slogans demanding safety measures near the tracks and accountability from railway authorities for repeated accidents in the area.
Police officials confirmed that necessary legal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the incident.
