Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates for the posts of MCD Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Standing Committee members were elected on Wednesday following voting, with the corporation getting Parvesh Wahi as its new Mayor.

BJP councillor Monika Pant from Anand Vihar was elected as the Deputy Mayor, with both candidates securing 156 votes.

On the other hand, the Congress party’s mayoral candidate, Haji Zarif, received nine votes. However, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) did not field any candidate in this election.

After the victory, the newly elected Mayor, Parvesh Wahi, expressed confidence that pending works would soon be taken up, with immediate priorities including upgrading and improving sanitation and waste management systems.

Speaking on the party’s victory, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva expressed confidence that the corporation, in coordination with the BJP-led Delhi government, would work to improve the city’s overall condition and development.

Commenting on AAP, he said the party was already aware that it was far from victory. He also expressed satisfaction that all BJP allies had won.

Sachdeva stated that whenever the BJP has been in power in the civic body, governance has been transparent and the corporation has strengthened. He alleged that during AAP’s tenure, there were irregularities and a lack of funds.

The BJP leader added that the party’s goal is to run the MCD with utmost honesty and transparency so that citizens receive all essential services.

Meanwhile, as per the configuration, a candidate required 137 votes to win. The electoral college comprised 273 votes, including 249 councillors, 14 nominated MLAs, seven Lok Sabha MPs and three Rajya Sabha MPs.

After the election, Sachdeva visited the Civic Centre and felicitated the newly elected Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Leader of the House, and Standing Committee members, offering them sweets.

He further stated that the party has ensured a balance between experience and youthful energy in its municipal team. While experienced leaders like Wahi and Jai Bhagwan Yadav have been chosen, younger leaders such as Dr. Monika Pant and Manish Chaddha have also been given the opportunity to serve and learn.

Sachdeva expressed confidence that the Mayor’s experience would contribute to improving the upkeep of Delhi.
