The Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) on Monday called the government to rectify the errors in voters’ list for Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) elections so that people could exercise their franchise during polls, scheduled to be held in May, 2017.

Shimla BJP MLA Suresh Bhardwaj, who along with party workers submitted a memorandum to Chief Secretary P Mitra, said the names of over 18,000 voters are missing from the electoral rolls of various wards of SMC and called for rectifying the error.

Bhardwaj said that there are several wards in SMC where names of many voters are missing from the list and these should be included to avert any inconvenience to them. “The residents are left high and dry by the way the electoral rolls for municipal elections have been prepared. The rolls are a complete mess and more than half the population has been left out as not more than 0.5 per cent young voters find space in the rolls,” he said, adding the voters in the age group of 18-22 seems to have been completely left out.

He accused the government of deliberately leaving out or shifting voters from one ward to another ward and said the entire process for electoral rolls should be conducted again. He called on the government to ensure free and fair elections and include the name of the left out voters.
