The BJP lashed out at Delhi government for not making “appropriate arrangements” for those observing Chhath Puja along banks of Yamuna river in the national capital, Leader of Opposition in Delhi assembly Vijender Gupta accused the Arvind Kejriwal government of cheating Poorvanchalis (population from Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh) after it failed to make 180 Pakka Chhath ghats (steps leading down to body of water).

Gupta said that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced to construct 180 ghats which are seen nowhere.

“Even the work for construction of these kuchha ghats has not started. Due to Delhi government’s negligence, people of Poorvanchal region are now themselves making temporary arrangements at these ghats,” he alleged.

He said he had also written a letter addressed to CM’s office in February this year demanding construction of a cemented steps (ghat) on western Yamuna canal near Bawana following demands made by the Chhatt Puja Samities.

“These Samitis have been demanding the construction of Pacca Chhath Ghat at the spot for last three years. Just two days are left for Chhath Puja festivities to begin but no arrangement is seen on these Chhath Ghats,” he alleged.

Gupta has directed the officials of Delhi government and the three municipal corporations to make adequate arrangements for cleanliness, lighting, health related services and bathing for women before the festivities for Chhath Puja begin.

Besides, LOP demanded that a high level meeting be convened by the Chief Minister with the Chhath Puja Vikas Samities so that proper arrangements could be made on Chhath Ghats as per their needs.

The city is estimated to have 40 lakh Poorvanchalis – 25% of the total vote share – and no political party can afford to ignore them.
