Ironically on a day when BJP president Amit Shah was exuding confidence of his party forming the government in Odisha and was playing the western Odisha card, his party drew a blank in Atabira NAC election in western part of the district and also secured just one seat in Hindol NAC of Dhenkanal district, a region belonging to Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Results to the elections for the two Notified Area Councils saw the ruling BJD sweep the polls with the Congress and BJP being rooted out. Incidentally, the Congress under the then OPCC chief Niranjan Patnaik had won both these NACs before quiet inexplicably Rahul Gandhi removed Niranjan Patnaik from the OPCC president post.

The ruling BJD of the state made a clean sweep in the NAC election at Atabira of Bargarh district where the party had recently won the Bijepur assembly bypoll defeating an upbeat BJP by over 40,000 votes. The BJD won all the 12 seats in the NAC blanking out the BJP and Congress.

“The people of Odisha are with BJD and Naveen Patnaik. At the same time, they have totally discarded BJP since they do nothing for the people except give good speeches with a lot of false promises and slogans “ commented Dr. Raseswari Panigrahi and Ms. Snehangini Chhuria, the MLAs after declaration of NAC results.

Dr Panigrahi and Ms. Chhuria were in charge of the elections for the BJD in Atabira. The NAC polls in Hindol of Dhenkanal district which is regarded as a turf of Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also came as a blow to the aspirations of the BJP. The BJP could win just one of the 16 seats.

Ruling BJD emerged victorious by winning 13 seats and Independent candidates won two seats. The Congress which had formed the NAC the last time was wiped out.

Last time around the Congress had won eight, the BJD two and BJP one with Independents winning in five wards. The Congress had formed the council with support of Independents. Hindol BJD MLA Simarani Nayak celebrated today’s thumping victory.
