Jajpur police claimed to have busted an interstate narcotics smuggling racket by arresting two of its members and seized 100.7 kilograms(one quintal 700 grams) of ganja (dry cannabis) from their possession.

Police also recovered a four wheeler, Rs 7440 cash, three mobile phones, five SIM cards, two driving licenses, three ATM cards from their possession. The accused have been identified as Saharul SK of Jasorari under Kandi police station of Mursidabad district in West Bengal and Sohel Raheman of Diar Fatepur under Lalgola police station of the same district, police said.

Police said acting on an input by Cuttack crime branch, they conducted a raid near Panikoili and arrested the duo with the ganja.

“On Tuesday night we received an input from the Crime Branch that a huge quantity of contraband is being transported to neighbouring West Bengal in a four wheeler. A police team of Panikoili police station led by DSP Rabindra Kumar Satpathy was deployed at the toll plaza along NH-16 near Panikili. The police team intercepted the vehicle carrying smuggling narcotics, seized one quintal 700 grams smuggled contraband which was packed in four polythene bags,” said a police official adding two persons were arrested in connection with the illegal trade.

The accused were transporting the narcotic substance from the border areas of Koraput and Malkangiri to neighbouring West Bengal, he said. Police said the arrested persons were being thoroughly interrogated in order to get more leads about the illegal narcotics trade. “It is an inter-state narcotics smuggling racket and more persons are involved in it. We are on the job and will arrest them soon,” he said. The accused were forwarded to the local court today and later remanded to judicial custody after their bail pleas were rejected, police said
