Workers belonging to Hindu Samhati allegedly thrashed journalists during a programme at Kolkata on Wednesday, 14 February, when they tried to ask questions at a religious conversion event.

According to reports, a family belonging to the minority community had been allegedly converted at the event being held at Rani Rashmoni Avenue.

A fracas broke when the journalists tried to speak to the family. It has been alleged that top leaders of the outfit were present on the stage when the members attacked the journalists.

The event was attended by the group’s founder Tapan Ghosh, who welcomed the family into the Hindu fold on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the outfit.

Republic TV reports that derogatory comments were allegedly made against the media. Hindu Samhati claimed that those who created the ruckus were outsiders.

According to ABP Ananda, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly condemned the attack on the journalists and assured action against the guilty members of the outfit.

Reports say that three persons have been arrested and Ghosh is being “examined” by the police.
