Chakharina village under the Jalghar gram panchayat in South Dinajpur district had found a new name and fame. Thanks to the 42 farmers who have been successfully producing organic vegetables there, the village is now well known as ‘Organic Chakharina.’

Needless to say, the transformation from the conventional farming method to the organic one has also given a boost to the local economy, while farmers are also a happier lot, local sources have said.

Farmers of the Chakharina village under the Balurghat Block have been farming the organic way on 12 acres of agricultural land. The district agriculture department and officials of the block agricultural department are taking care of the village and maintaining good relations with the farmers, it is learnt.

“The organic method was successfully implemented in the village through continued campaign and training processes,” an official said. The district agriculture department chose the village in the year 2016 and arranged for training for the farmers on the organic cultivation process.

“At present, farming for the winter season and preparations to grow vegetables for the upcoming summer season are going on successfully. The local farmers are demanding that adjoining villages like Gangasagar, Shyampur, Boroline, and part of Chakvrigue are also given help in practicing organic farming,” official added.
